My Friend’s Last, Dying Hours

It has been exactly a year since a good friend left me. He was my companion during those years when I dreamt and learned to smash the guitar, wreaked the piano, pounded the drums, and screamed on the top of my lungs in the tune of my favorite anthems.

He said his goodbye at around midnight of this date last year. With his demise, the Philippine airwaves was changed forever. And he brought with him my other kabarkadas. No more Rock Ed Radio. No more In The Raw. No more Stairway to Seven. No more forty-minute rockathon.

It was this time last year when NU 107 said his last goodbye.

Most of us who cared stayed with our friend during his last, dying hours. We had the chance to say our last goodbyes before his death at midnight.

One of our friend’s fathers, Chris “Cris Cruise” Hermosisima was the last one to speak to the microphone and utter the now famous last words of our friend.

“So let’s do this for the last time. It’s a minute before 12. NU107 is DWNU FM at 107 dot 5 megahertz in Pasig, once the loudest and proudest member of the KBP. This has been NU107, the Philippines’ one and only Home of NU Rock. This is NU107. We are signing off.”

And after those words, “Ang Huling El Bimbo” by the Eraserheads was played for the last time, signalling the death of an institution, an end of an era.

Outside the station, hundreds of fans were gathered, candles in their hands, mourning the death of a friend. And I am sure that thousand others, including me, were tuned in on radio and the live stream on the internet to send the station off.

So long NU 107! You have played an important part in building the music scene in this country. You have helped the music of the aspiring musicians to be heard. You have served us well.

RIP Home of Nu Rock. Return if Possible. And on the same frequency please.

Because it is still a pain in my ear to hear the hypnotic Win Radio! Win Radio! Win Radio! on the 107.5 MHZ frequency.

“Famous Last Words”
History has recorded some of the famous last words of renowned personalities. Though the late, great home of nu rock NU 107 is not a person per se, let us remember its famous last words before signing off as seen and heard inside the booth.
Station Manager Chris “Cris Cruise” Hermosisima was the last one to speak to the microphone and utter the now-memorable parting words of the station:

“So let’s do this for the last time. It’s a minute before 12. NU107 is DWNU FM at 107 dot 5 megahertz in Pasig, once the loudest and proudest member of the KBP. This has been NU107, the Philippines’ one and only Home of NU Rock. This is NU107. We are signing off.”

And after those words, “Ang Huling El Bimbo” by the Eraserheads was played for the last time by the station.

Also seen inside the station are owner Atom Henares (wearing blue), his former wife Dr. Vicky Belo, and daughter Crystal Henares.
Thanks for the memories NU 107. The music will live on. Padayon!

107 Candles for NU 107: The Last Goodbye

It’s all over. NU 107 has bid us goodbye last midnight. Philippine radio has changed forever with this sudden move. No more home of nu rock for us. No more In the Raw. No more Rock Ed Radio. And no more radio station that inspired a whole generation to be a rock star.

Most of us, or most of us who cared, tuned in last night during the last dying hours of the station. Station Manager Chris Hermosisima was the last one to take the microphone. After thanking God, his family, and his boss Atom Henares, he reminded everyone to “disperse quietly” before calling off for the last time the NU 107 station ID.

And “Ang Huling El Bimbo” by the Eraserheads was the last song to be played by the station for the “longest running and best rock and roll station.”

This video is the last 10 minutes of the station as seen just outside the booth. It has a better quality than this one which was posted earlier at Pinoy Tumblr.

So long NU 107. Thanks for the memories. Padayon!

Salamat - The Dawn

Gasgas. Timeless. Walang Kamatayan.

Kung may ilang salita siguro na maglalarawan sa rock anthem na iyan ng The Dawn, iyon na siguro ang mga nakasulat sa itaas. Kalimitan iyang nagiging last song kapag may pagtitipon o kapag may mga programa.

Salamat. :’)

Eulogy for NU107: There is a Light That Never Goes Out

The inevitable has come. NU 107, my source of rock music, my partner during my toxic lamay nights at work, the radio station that gave me Rock Ed Radio, will finally bid us goodbye.
I admit, you are not my first love. I am a Campus Radio 97.1 WLSFM kid. I am a sucker of John Hendrix and Triggerman’s Daily Top 20 at 12. But you were always there, waiting for me to change the dial of my radio whenever the other stations have had enough of cheesy and overrated pop songs.
I hate goodbyes. I don’t even know how to begin with.
I’ll just let Lourd de Veyra do the honors for me.
So long NU 107. Thanks for the memories. You will forever be remembered.

…This is - was - NU107, the Home of New Rock. Referring to it in the past tense still saddens me. I, too, used to have issues with its playlist, though very few and middling; thanks to the fog of years (and the onset of the mist of wisdom, whatever that means). But the fact it was the only one of its kind on the airwaves. It’s the only one with the balls to hang on to an all-rock playlist for the past 23 years. It is narrow-minded to regard it as the “mainstream” or “establishment”—in an industry where it is too tempting to play Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. Every time it decides to stick to playing something with a power chord it is not making money. It’s been a corporate social responsibility for far too long. Sooner or later it would inevitably kowtow to fundamental realities—the economics of advertising revenues, changing demographic, competition from new technology, etc . Neil Young said it’s better to burn out than fade away. Twenty three years is definitely a noble run.
Talk has it that the station will be taken over by the same company that operates Energy FM—which imposed on the national consciousness the phrases “Hi Panga!” “Joke, joke, joke,” and “Meh ganun?!!” Look, I’m rock and roll, but this is just too rock and roll for me. To those about to rock, we salute you, but good luck finding a place in the airwaves that’ll  play your stuff.

Grieving Protesta of Yourself Wednesday (GPOYW)
They said it’s official. NU 107 is to change format from being all-rock to mainstream pop on Sunday, November 7, 2010. If you have been listening to NU this week, you may have noticed that jocks and radio shows are already saying their goodbye to their loyal listeners.
And this is what I found on one of the posts of Quark Henares, NU DJ and son of station owner Atom Henares:

I am grieving because radio will forever be changed with this sudden turn. I am in protest since NU 107 has been my source if new rock songs for years and none will replace the awesomeness of NU 107.
But the inevitable has to happen. We just have to accept it.
Thanks NU 107 for the memories. You will forever be remembered. Rock on!
This is an old photo dating back to 2008. I just decided to revive it for my GPOYW and to express my sentiments.

New sound for the 107.5 Frequency
Bad News: NU 107 is closing down and it will soon be the home of NO Rock. The Radio station will say goodbye to its rock format and will shift into a “masa” pop station under a new management.
The 107.5 frequency will never be the same again. Say goodbye to your rock music and rock anthems and say hello to the hits of Willie Revillame and April Boy Regino.
Or not.
Thanks for the memories NU 107.
