At nakaraos nga.

Guilty Pleasures
After a stressful (yet fulfilling) week of facilitating a recollection and retreat to the High School students of Laguna State Polytechnic University last week, I decided to unwind and enjoy ‘the fruit of my labor’ yesterday.
I usually spend my paycheck, honorarium, salary, and stipend on just two things: Books and CDs/records. And here are the stuff that I purchased yesterday to add up to my colection:
The Sherlockian (Graham Moore)
I got addicted to Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes after rediscovering it through the BBC series Sherlock. The American version starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law is quite okay but the TV series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman made me love the character more. Or shall I say, it made me to be obsessed on Sherlock’s character (my Facebook timeline cover and my Tumblr display photo is Sherlock as portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch.)
I first saw this book sometime last January during the time when the second season of Sherlock has just finished. I was looking for good books (read: window shopping) at National Book Store in SM Calamba when I saw this at the new arrival section. Hungry for a new Sherlock material (because the third season is scheduled to premiere on 2013), I decided to download an electronic copy of the book. But because it’s a pain in my eyes to read in front of the computer (I have no tablet nor an eBook reader) and I want a tangible, smelly book, I decided to save some of my earnings and buy this one.
Because I still have books that are scheduled to be read first, I have not yet taken it out from the plastic packaging. But I promise to make a review after I read it.
A Question of Heroes (Nick Joaquin)
I came across this book here on Tumblr. My good Tumblr buddies/idols Sir Nik (@iwriteasiwrite), Sir Kim (@ellobofilipino), Tita Marj (@margoism), Joseph (@brownmonkeytheory), and Myts (@marinjabin) either discuss this book or make this as a reference on their posts. I got curious especially when I learned that this book contains historical accounts/facts which are not discussed in school and it gives a different angle on how we view our heroes.
History is my favorite subject from Elementary to College (even though I suffered from teachers who did not teach history well).  I have been always fascinated with the stories of the past and how it continue to affect and shape the future. But I have been fed with the history of Zaide, Agoncillo, and Constantino in College so, according to what I have learned here, I have a biased and limited approach to history. (It’s funny to think that I have learned more about Philippine history after graduating from College by reading blogs and posts here on Tumblr.)
I have painstakingly searched for this book for months here in the Laguna-Batangas area but to no avail. But I got my chance yesterday. This is one of the only two copies available on the bookstore (and this has a better condition compared to the other).
Simply put, this is Philippine History which was not taught to us in School.
Dalawang Mukha ng Pag-ibig (Ebe Dancel)
Five months after Sugarfree broke up, its front man and chief songwriter Ebe Dancel released his debut album as a solo artist with the title Dalawang Mukha ng Pag-ibig.
But my excitement for the album instantly fade away. It was the height of my, uhm, personal financial crisis. I cannot buy his 350-peso limited edition 2-CD debut album. Yeah, poor me.  I could have just illegally downloaded the songs then but no. I do not want to rob my favorite artist. I do not want to steal from the great man who created the anthems of my College years. Just as I supported his former band by buying their original albums, I must also give my full support for Ebe as a solo artist.
Painful as it was, I just let the months pass by without owning his album. But it was worth the wait. And my money. I have been listening to this album all day and trust me, this will not fail you.
________
I can be described by the Tagalog phrase mababaw ang kaligayahan. I don’t usually buy clothes, gadgets, food, and throw a party at an exclusive club (bitch please) whenever I get my pay check. It always go to books and records. And beer. And coffee. Or a good book over a cup of coffee/bottle of beer with a good music on the background.
I believe that books and music are terapheutic and they will teach you even after you finish school. The good things about reading books and listening to good music have  been repeatedly written and preached in the past. And I won’t dig any further.
Yeah, money can’t buy you happiness. But it can help you own great books and good music which is almost the same, right? Invest on it. And make it a habit.
So the next time you ask me what gift do I want for any (special) occasion, here, you already have a clue.
Nah, I’m just kidding.
But you can take it seriously.
Vaya con Dios!

Mga Librong Paparating na Hindi ninyo Dapat Palampasin

Sa darating na Sabado, ika-10 ng Setyembre, ay gaganapin ang kauna-unahang WIT: Visprint’s First Annual Reader’s Day. Anong ibig sabihin noon? Ewan.

Kahit pa ang mga ito, ika nga ni kumpareng Soriano, ay nakasulat sa language of the streets and not of the learned.

Dinky Soliman’s Origin: Hair of Nymphadora Tonks + Physique of Dolores Umbridge
I was always fascinated with DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman’s colored burloloy-ed hair. She’s unique and the most stylish among the Cabinet Secretaries. So I asked the newly installed Zodiac Sign Orphiuchus about its origin.
Okay I was just kidding. I used my imagination and thought of something magical to explain her cutie decolores burloloy.
The first person that entered my mind was Nymphadora Tonks - a half-blood witch on the Harry Potter series and a metamorphmagus. A metamorphmagus is a witch or a wizard with the ability to change her appearance at will, rather than using potion or spell.
Dinky Soliman is also famous on sporting different colored burloloy-ed hair. She may not be able to change it on will but we enjoy her different hair color.
On a second thought, I remembered Dolores Umbridge. She has the physique of Secretary Soliman. Had the Philippines made an adaptation of Harry Potter series, I suggest Secretary Soliman to play the role of Umbridge. And yes, Nova Villa is also an option.
On a deeper sense, we can also think of Dinky Soliman as a Political Metamorphmagus (If J.K. Rowling will allow me to use that term). She was a DSWD Secretary of Gloria Arroyo and her BFF. But Dinky turned her back on her former boss, joined the Black and White Movement, jumped to the other side of the political fence, and is now again the DSWD Secretary under Noynoy Aquino’s Administration.
This is Philippine Politics. Welcome aboard!
The real world may not be as magical as the world J. K. Rowling created. But we can make our own magic. But when something is fucked up with the governement, no cruciatus curse nor verisaterum can mend things up. We must fix it ourselves.
That is the big difference between reality and magic.
But Secretary Soliman, don’t get me wrong. You will always be my favorite fashionista Cabinet Secretary. Padayon!

Angels and Jejemons: Isang Pagsusuri (o Isang Mapagkunwaring Book Review)

At naniniwala akong madami pa kayong matutulungan.
Sa bandang huli, nais kong iwanan sa inyo ang katagang ito: “Bob Ong may have stereotyped the writing style of some Pinoy writers but only a wide reader can break that notion.” (Pinag-isipan ko yan. Bawal nakawin.)
Padayon!

“10-10-10 on Print”
Tikman ang Langit (An Anthology on the Eraserheads) - Earlier this afternoon, we went to the seminary to visit my brother. After bragging my Eraserheads box set to my brother, I asked him to give me my copy of this book which I left in the seminary when I graduated last 2009. I’ll read this once again to feel the Eraserheads from an ordinary fan’s perspective.
PULP Magazine - If you have been following the Republic for quite some time now, then you must know that I am an avid collector of this magazine. I went to SM City Lipa to buy this one. Luckily, I was able to get this last copy at the supermarket (Why did they close Filbars?!). General Luna and Chicosci graced the cover of the latest issue (September) of PULP.
The Elements of Style (Strunk and White) - I already have an eBook of this one but I prefer to buy the real book because this one is more handy (I don’t have an eBook reader except for my 15-inch laptop) and I miss the wonders and smell of print. Every blogger, writer, students, and professionals should have this one so go and grab yourself a copy!

Luckily, I was able to get this last copy at the supermarket (Why did they close Filbars?!). General Luna and Chicosci graced the cover of the latest issue (September) of PULP.
  • The Elements of Style (Strunk and White) - I already have an eBook of this one but I prefer to buy the real book because this one is more handy (I don’t have an eBook reader except for my 15-inch laptop) and I miss the wonders and smell of print. Every blogger, writer, students, and professionals should have this one so go and grab yourself a copy!

History of Philosophy by Frederick Copleston (A Book Review)

THIS IS THE MOST DREADED PHILOSOPHY BOOK IN MY INSTITUTION.

So you want to undergo a major operation but your hospital runned out of supply of anaesthesia?? Are you having a hard time to sleep at night (probably an insomiac or for other reasons)?? Do you want to play with the ancient philosophers and deal with things that most of us didn’t bother to deal with?? Do you want an INSTANT (with emphasis) migraine, vomiting and nausea??

So THIS is a MUST read for you. it has been in the market for ages (even during the time when my oldest professors are still students) - a certified reference book for philosophy. But you see, the construction of the statements, the explanations and discussions are INCOMPARABLE with the other history of Philosophy books.

It’s difficult to understand (most especially for a young, normal college student) and i don’t think many of us normal eartlhings would dare to read this book (oops, WE have read this one, it is a requirement, but i promise you that we are normal).

For instance, there are parts in the book with Greek words and statements—-WITH NO ENGLISH TRANSLATION!!! good thing, we have our professor who is very well versed in the Greek language. but how about those students whoare deprived of such professor??

To quote one of the students who underwent the prolific deliberation of the author’s idea: “Kahit ilang beses basahin ng paulit-ulit, mahirap talagang intindihin..”

But the book and the author must not be judged (ironical?) because of its not-so-easy-to-understand style, it is one of the BEST references on the history of philosophy ever made in the history of man’s thinking. In fact, most of the easy-to-read History of Philosopy books have Frederick Copleston and his works as reference. It is the MOTHER of all those nerve-wracking, nose bleeding, mind-boggling, tear flowing HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY BOOKS.

Prolific. Incomparable. The best.

But sadly, many universities are phasing out this magnificent book because of the appearance of easy-to-read history of philosophy books and references.

I hope this review is not a eulogy for the great late Frederick Copleston and his immortal works! Long live (eh?!) Frederick Copleston and his works!

Bookworm. I have tried this Visual Bookshelf application on Facebook. It displays the books that one has read, is reading, and is planning to read. I have displayed (some) of the books that I have read - mostly the recent ones. I love to feed my mind with ideas by great authors. As a writer/blogger/former editor-in-chief of our publication, I have to read a lot. I am a bookworm. I am proud of it.
These are the books that changed my life. What are yours?
