The Different Faces of ‘Guilt’

Yesterday, we made history. In a 20-3 vote by the Senator-Judges to convict Chief Justice Renato Corona, he became the first highest magistrate of the land to be impeached. And with that, he was stripped off of all his benefits as a public official and is perpetually banned from taking public office in the future.

Some said that Chief Justice Renato Corona’s fate was sealed since the first day of the impeachment trial. The voting of the Senators yesterday - together with their colorful explanations and early electioneering - was anticlimactic. And some said that when Chief Justice Renato Corona staged his dramatic ‘walkout’ at the Senate, he left a bad impression among the Senators and thus, sealing his fate.

Different opinion, different view points. But behind all of these, one thing is certain - a man’s life and that of his family are changed forever.

I have always been an enthusiast of newspapers’ and magazines’ front page and cover. Since the advent of my bumming in our school library and in my parents’ office library, I have been always fascinated with covers and front pages of various local and international broadsheets and magazines. In fact, it is my daily habit before starting a day’s work to browse and to look at various front pages and covers whether it be in print or in digital format. I consider it as an exceptional art and as a part of history as well.

And in lieu of yesterday’s historical event, here are today’s front pages of some of our country’s major broadsheets.

Enjoy these little pieces of history!

Personal Observation:

The Philippine Daily Inquirer has been repeatedly criticized on social media, particularly on Twitter, for being pro-Noynoy Aquino. There were some instances in the past when their headlines, photos and their captions were those that would pull down the enemies of the Aquino administration.

Take for example yesterday’s issue. There were two banner stories but the story that would favor for the conviction of Chief Justice Corona has a bigger font size. And in today’s issue in what appears to be a minimalist one, the lay-out artist and the editor (or whoever made that one) chose the biggest possible font size to flaunt the ‘guilt’ of the Chief Justice.

Are these purely coincidental or a virtual subliminal message? I will leave the judgment to you. But it seems that the Inquirer is not the sole broadsheet who used a bigger font size. Because if you look closely, the Manila Standard also used a big one.

I hope this is the beginning of a new era for our country. Padayon Pilipinas!

What’s wrong with this photo?
Take a closer look at the photo above. You will see a man wearing a blue polo browsing (and allegedly buying) over a stash of pirated DVDs.
So what’s wrong? Almost everyone of us are guilty of this act. I am sure that most of us have visited our suking manong dibidi to look for and buy copies of our favorite TV Shows, movies, concerts, and albums (before the advent of torrents, I presume). Though we all know piracy is the cause of the loss of profit of the music and movie industry, most of us still patronize this cheaper and alternative way of entertainment.
Going back to the photo, take a look again. Do you recognize that man? Just a few months ago, he was at the headlines of broadsheets and news programs after his Mistubishi Montero, then being used by two of his security aides, figured in an accident on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City—and yielded a Czech-made CZ-858 Tactical semiautomatic assault rifle in the ensuing police investigation (source).
The man above is Rolando Llamas, Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs. Yes my dear reader, he is a member of President Noynoy Aquino’s Cabinet. The report says that he bought Php 2,000 worth of Pirated DVDs at Circle C Mall in Congressional Avenue, Quezon City, on Monday night.
A government official, who is suppose to lead the people on the campaign against piracy (don’t give me an excuse that piracy is not your Department’s work), is seen buying pirated stuff. Classic.
I am not saying that Mister Llamas should be condemned for buying pirated DVDs (the law, unfortunately, has no provision to penalize the buyer). And we still have to listen at Mister Llamas’ side whether he actually purchased pirated DVDs or not. But I believe in leadership by example, he should have avoided that place - or doing that act - in the first place.
What would Noynoy Aquino do? Will he reprimand, or sack, his political adviser? But Roland Llamas is also one of the shooting buddies of the President.
So much for the daang matuwid.

25 Years Later

Yesterday, January 22, 2012, marked the 25th year of the gruesome Mendiola Massacre, an incident that happened in Mendiola on January 22, 1987 in which Government security forces violently dispersed a farmers’ protest march to Malacañan Palace.

A wounded protester is helped by a peasant activist after the shooting broke out. Ramon Acasio

Pardon me for this late post. Aside from being busy yesterday because of my class, the major broadsheets yesterday did not put the commemoration of the massacre in their front page. Instead, I saw items about the Impeacment Trial, the Roman-Shalai wedding, Chinese New Year, and more impeachment brouhahas.

Or maybe because they are biased for President Noynoy Aquino and they do not want to talk about it. It would be remembered that the incumbent President’s mother, Cory Aquino, was the President during that time. (Well, this is just me with my crazy imagination. I will just leave it there.) Moving on..

Aside from the Maguindanao Massacre, I consider the Mendiola Massacre as an event that should not be forgotten or slip past our consciousness. If we saw slain journalists in Maguindanao, we have helpless peasants and farmers in Mendiola.

Peasants and farmers have a special place in my heart,. I lived with some of them during my formation years in College. And since the advent of my awakening, I have always supported the cause of the poor and the oppressed for justice, freedom, and ownership. You may not see me with a banner or a raised fist in the streets but I believe that there are other ways to support their cause other than protests and rallies.

Landless farmers. Feudalism has long been gone in Europe but it is still practiced in some parts of our country up to this day. The Agrarian Reform programs of the Government appears to be a failure. The problems of the landless farmers still haunt our country and I don’t see a beacon of hope that will signal its end. (Well, the Hacienda Luisita has been granted to the farmers - in a decision and not in reality - but there are still other lands that are yet to be distributed. Hopefully.)

Twenty-five years ago, a massacre happened near Malacañang, a bloody result of the fight of the farmers for land ownership and social justice. And twenty-five years later, justice is still nowhere in sight.

Will it happen on the term of the son of the President during the massacre? Is justice for the landless farmers included in the promised daang matuwid? I don’t know. I think they are still busy hunting the previous administration and her allies.

I want to see a new day where there will be no more landless farmers, no more greedy landowners, and no more social injustice brought by land ownership disputes.

And no more state-sponsored killing spree for these individuals.

Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the Mendiola Massacre. Never forget. Never again.

Seventh Year
A few weeks ago, a viral video of the alleged lies and crimes by the Aquino Family spread like wildfire on various forms of social media. Those who were amazed by the amazing videography and presentation of the details (for the record, I did not say facts) immediately believed and shared the video. While those who were discriminating enough, did their research, double-checked the details, and consulted other historians about the veracity of the video as a whole.
While some of the video’s details may not be a verified fact (i.e. the Antonio Luna and Ysidra Cojuangco love affair), one cannot deny the fact that some of the events really happened. And one of the crimes shown on the video that was a proven, actual event, was the infamous Hacienda Luisita Massacre.
Seven years ago today, twelve (12) picketing farmers and two (2) children were allegedly killed by the police and the military in a violent dispersal at the Gate 1 of the Hacienda Luisita.
And up to this day, no one was charged for that crime.
The recent circus brought by the opposing sides of the Executive and the Judicial Departments, Gloria Arroyo’s airport drama and Leila De Lima’s defiance of the Supreme Court order, the controversies of Pacquiao’s win and the New 7 Wonders of Nature, and Attorney Ferdinand topacio’s sacrificial bayag may have overshadowed today’s memorial of the event.
But by letting this event just pass us by our consciousness, we seem to be condoning the perpetrators of this crime. Or depriving justice to the victims and their families. Or allowing the culture of impunity in our country.
He who does not punish evil commands it to be done.
Justice for the victims of the Hacienda Luisita Massacre! Never forget. Never again.

“Noynoying”

Nine days after the onslaught of Typhoons “Pedring” and “Quiel,” President Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday finally saw for himself flood-devastated areas in three provinces.

We live in the age of internet and social media. This is the age when new words and terms spread faster than a new strain of flu and memes are as ordinary as the everyday traffic situation at EDSA.
We’ve seen a lot. From the way jejemons type their messages to the new poses such as planking, owling, batmaning, and bakling. And now, inspired by our President’s alleged management style, there’s a new term that is about to spread (if successful) in the internet.
Noynoying.
I was drunk browsing cyber stuff last night when I came across a screen cap of a Facebook conversation supposedly coming from Overheard at UP Facebook page. According to it, noynoying is defined as a term for that idle moment na walang ginagawa pero dapat ay mayroon na.
For example, Dapat nagre-review pero noynoying muna.
Procrastination has a new name. And it was inspired by our President.
Critics have been accusing Aquino of being lax on his duty as President and having poor management skills. Recently, the Opposition slammed Aquino for not being present during the onslaught of Typhoons Pedring and Quiel.
This is not the first time that Aquino was criticized for not being present during the time of crisis. During the height of the Quirino Grandstand hostage crisis, the President was also criticized for not being present at the situation. During the height of the tragedy.
If that would always be the case, we should have picked a superhero instead as our leader. Like Bayani Fernando.
Is Noynoy Aquino really lax or not? Are you satisfied with the way the Administration deal with tragedies and calamities? (Okay, this sounds like a Teevee Patrol text poll).
Maybe. But I believe that one is immortalized when his name is used as an adjective. And a verb. Like Noynoying. Or numo-Noynoy.
Keep calm. And stop noynoying.
Be productive Pilipinas! Padayon!

President Benigno Aquino and Vice President Jejomar Binay witness the arrival at the Villamor Airbase in Fort Bonifacio of the slain seven Marines. MARIANNE BERMUDEZ/INQUIRER

Perhaps the whole country is busy dealing with Juaning and Kabayan. Or about the alleged ballot switching at the Batasang Pambansa. Or too occupied praying for Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (whether they pray for her safety and recovery or the opposite, I don’t know). Or still mourning after the loss of the Azkals for their 2014 world cup bid. Or celebrating Eat Bulaga’s 32nd anniversary. Or just doing some other stuff that we failed to notice this another gruesome event at the southern part of our country.
Our marines had an encounter with the Abu Sayaff last Thursday at the jungles of Sulu and five (5) of them were decapitated.
Beheading is not something new for these bandits. Most of us would still remember how they decapitate their kidnapped victims and how they dehumanize our troops by beheading the soldiers they kill in the battle.
Maybe the Abu Sayyaf is making their presence felt. For the past few months, we barely hear a thing about them (or maybe the news agencies are just too busy covering and showing us the other important issues? I don’t know.). This just shows that the violence in the south is far from over and the government has still a lot of work to do to attain the peace in the south.
I can still remember a Catholic priest who was assigned in Basilan who told us his first-hand experience with these bandits and their victims. He was the guest speaker on the (Lipa) Clergy’s monthly recollection when I was still in the seminary. He told us his story when he was assigned to bless the mutilated corpses of the 10 soldiers who were slain and beheaded in Basilan in an encounter in 2007. He could not believe how barbaric these bandits were by doing this hideous crime.
After hearing his story, I was moved and I felt that I was also in front those slain heroes. But he also left a challenge in me if I have the courage to be assigned in a far-flung place with all the perils and dangers accompanying the mission.
Courage. I admire these courageous heroes who sacrificed their lives by defending the country. It is just sad to hear these sad tales about our soldiers in the field amidst these controversies involving the high-ranking officials of the military.
To our heroes in the field, to the thousand nameless and ordinary soldiers who fought to defend our country, thank you for a job-well done. You may have gone but your contribution to the country is priceless and may it always be remembered by the generations to come.
I give you my snappy salute.

Who’s that girl?
The heat of the debate on the controversial Reproductive Health Bill has reached its high blood point so I decided to take a break and write something different. This time, focusing on the most important issue this country has ever faced. In fuck (read: fact), this is more important than the RH Bill, the Freedom of Information Bill and Kris Aquino’s love life.
This is about President Noynoy Aquino’s new girl. This is about the bachelor president’s love life.
The President has repeatedly asked the media to leave his personal and unofficial business in private. But because the people want it, they give it. It is in the Pinoy culture to love entertainment and gossipy news items so why not include the highest official in the land? After all, there is not much boundary between Philippine showbiz and politics.
And he is Kristina Bernadette Aquino’s brother.
The latest addition to the women linked to our bachelor president is the teacher Bunny Calica. She was with the President during the reunion concert of 70’s group Hotdog (buti na lang hindi Justin Bieber!).
And like all the women linked to the president before, she has a beautiful face, fair-skinned, and younger than him. I think the last one was the most important category. Well that was just a wild and crazy speculation.
Is she the right one for the President? We don’t know yet. I will only believe if the news will come from the most reliable and trusted spokesperson of the President - her youngest sister Kris.
And on other things:
I fear that Baby James “Bimby” Aquino-Yap will be following the footsteps of his mother. As early as now, he has been asking questions like that of his mother’s. (Oh James! Guide the boy please!)
According to Communications Secretary Ricky Carandang, it was Mar Roxas’ idea to watch the concert. Wow! If that is true, he’s not only the President’s Chief Troubleshooter/ Chief of Staff but also the Chief Happy Happy! Organizer (Joke lang po! Pero puwedeng seryosohin.).
The President’s love life may always get the attention of the media but let us not forget that there are other far more important things in the country. should we blame the media for always broadcasting these things? Partly yes but not wholly.
Personally, I am deeply saddened that the media, especially during these times that the attention is focused on the RH Bill, has lessen their news items on other thins: FOI Bill, Maguindanao Massacre, etc.
There are other important things that we need to face to achieve the promised daang matuwid. Let’s just leave our driver in peace.

Jump Brother! (and Other Missing Personalities)
Whether we were in EDSA in 1986 or not, most of us are familiar with the famous “victory jump” of then-AFP vice Chief-of-Staff Fidel “Tabako” Ramos.
And yesterday, during the 25th anniversary of the bloodless revolution at EDSA, our beloved tabako shows that he can still jump high.
Nag-Flanax siguro bago pumunta doon.

President Aquino beams as former President Fidel Ramos and former Senator Agapito “Butz” Aquino reenacts the historic “jump” as EDSA Heroes and personalities does a “kapit-bisig” and singing “Magkaisa”

Someone is missing yesterday. Where is Manong Johnny Enrile? And where is his famous usi na nakasabit sa kanyang balikat back in 1986?
Where is the kilabot-ng-mga-kolehiyala-noong-1986-pamatay-sa-bigote-pare Gringo Honasan? He’s missing in action yesterday. Ah I know.
Or naglalaro sila ngayon ng Senti Sabado?
Though Cardinal Sin and Tita Cory are no longer with us, they are still with us in spirit.
Viva Filipinas! Padayon!

Birthday Wishes
It was Noynoy Aquino’s birthday yesterday, February 8.

Father Arnold Abelardo leads Presidential Sisters Kristina Bernadette “Kris” Aquino, Victoria Elisa “Viel” Aquino-Dee and husband Richard Dee, Vice President Jejomar Binay and senior government officials for a pray over to President Benigno S. Aquino III during the Thanksgiving Mass for the 51st Birthday of the President officiated by Fr. Abelardo, Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at the Heroes Hall, Malacañan Palace.

Some of us may have overlooked this event (yes, including me). The news about the tragic death of General Angelo Tomas-Reyes may have overshadowed this important day for the President on the evening news last night and on the broadsheets today.
This is Noynoy’s first birthday as the President of the Republic. And the creative minds and conspiracy theorists on the internet are saying that the birthdays of the Aquino family are a jinx for our country. The bus explosion at EDSA-Buendia happened on January 25, Tita Cory’s birthday. Angelo Reyes’s suicide happened yesterday, Noynoy’s birthday. So we are warned to take an extra precaution on February 14, Kris Aquino’s birthday.
So much for these chismis. Let’s just wait for 2012.
It is but natural for someone to give his/her birthday wish(es) to the birthday celebrator. And here at Juan republic, I have something, some wishes for the President of the Republic.
“Lab layp pareng Noy, matanda ka na. Baka hindi ka na abutan ng apo..” - this is one of the most common wish for any bachelor during his birthday. Well, we are all aware (insert sarcasm here) that his love life is as important as any national issue on this country, so let’s wish him luck. Or perhaps, he was called to the vocation of single blessedness (a modest way of saying matandang binata hanggang kamatayan). Pero kung ano man, just be reminded of your favorite sister’s famous line “Love! Love! Love!”
BMW - We are all aware that you have recently bought a Porsche and I am just okay with that. I don’t care what you do with your own money. so I am wishing that you buy a BMW. No, not the expensive car but BMW - Buhok Mo Wig.
Duct Tape - This is not for your sister Kris. This is for you Sir. I have noticed na lagi kang naka-ngana sa mga pictures mo. Panget po kasing tingnan. Paki-takpan po muna. Madami po kasing kumakain. Salamat po. (Joke lang po Presidente Noy! Pero seriously, bawas-bawasan niyo po ang pag-nganga. Salamat po.)
Use electronic yosi instead - Your health plays a vital role in your Presidency. Kapag ika’y nagkasakit, pamamalakad ay sasabit. Set a good example. Quit puffing nicotine. Use e-cigarettes. Nuff’ said.
Honesty and zeal on running this country - We all remember your promised hindi ako magnanakaw and daang matuwid. Don’t fail us. Keep focused. Keep all the shits - whether it be persons or even your close friends - out of our way. I still trust you man.
Guidance from the Dude up there - Your family is known for being a very religious family, most especially your Mom. Keep it up. You will need every help from the Great Man up there on running this country.
As much as I know that we are all part of nation building, I still believe that we need an upright leader and a good example. Again, happy birthday Sir. The Filipinos are counting on you.
Viva Filipinas! Padayon!

Now na!
“Pare, sure ka ha? Matinik sa chicks yung Porsche?” - Hindi pa rin mapigil ang mga kritiko sa biniling auto ni Noynoy. Sabi pa nga ng ilan, doon na lang daw inilalabas ni Pangulong Noy ang kanyang urges dahil tutal, single naman siya. It’s a big boy’s toy mga Pare!
Matatandaang sinabi kahapon ni Noynoy na “I am no Superman. I need Mar”.
Ready? Go!
